The late J.C. Raulston had the inspiration of crossing the Asian Calycanthus sinensis with the native Calycanthus floridus. The result? A superlative plant with fast-growing, 8-inch tall branches covered with large, glossy, green leaves and hundreds of 2-inch, liver-red flowers. In bloom mid-April to May, this is one plant that we absolutely must have.
