With bold needled foliage that is Taxus-like but thicker and often much longer, podocarpus are drought-tolerant denizens of warm temperate mountain forests in Asia. 'Red Tip' is a very dwarf, slow-growing spreader with tiny rounded dark green needles and showy red flushes of growth in late summer that provide excellent contrast to the foliage through winter months. Outside of mild winter zones this makes an excellent dark textural accent in large containers and can be overwintered if brought into a brightly lighted space where temperatures remain above 25 degrees F.
