This is the only Hydrangea common in cultivation to have globular flowers whose sterile florets have sepals in the shape of tiny spoons, similar in appearance to the rounded, waxy blossoms of lilacs. With pale pink to light blue coloration depending on soil pH, this selection also offers a slight fragrance, rare among the hortensias.
