This much-loved native, found wild in woodsy, moist habitats, just as easily thrives in designed water, moist woodland and rain gardens. Without doubt, one of the very best clear, bright red bloomers, Cardinal Flower tops the list for moist and shady spots. Upright spikes shine in late summer, with broad-lipped tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Provide steady moisture, and some shade in hotter climates. Match with the brilliant reds of Spigelia planted in drier parts of the garden, or contrast alongside tall Japanese Irises.
