Skimmias, native to the Himalayas and the Far East, form lovely evergreen shrubs. Most are dioecious, with male and female flowers on different plants, so you need to plant both sexes for a good show of berries. Male plants by themselves are beautiful, with eye-catching bell-shaped clusters of very fragrant tiny flowers, and the best choice for this is 'Kew Green'. Plants form a neat, mounded shrub with domed habit, with small, shiny green leaves. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it their prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM).
