Acer davidii Serpentine

Description

It was in Sichuan Province near the Shaanxi border that I collected the seed that gave rise to these plants. Very unlike what I consider the typical A. davidii in cultivation, the leaves of these individuals were extremely large, to 6'', deep green, rounded and unlobed and possessing a leathery texture. The bark of this species offers a delicious striation of green and white which is best preserved by planting in areas of complete to modest shade in any well-drained soil. Ultimately to 35 ft.
