In youth, the 'Fastigiata' displays a narrow, fastigiate form, gradually acquiring a teardrop or oval-vase shape with age. We've trained several to create a free-form topiary (see photo, above). In early spring, before the foliage arrives, it produces monoecious flowering catkins, in shades from yellow to green. The ovate, toothed, bright green leaves that follow are attractive year-round. This selection's textural attractions include the smooth gray bark and distinctive muscle-like fluting.
